Best Engagement Locations - Outside of Boston, MA

Looking to get out of the city for your engagement photos? Good call. Massachusetts is packed with spots that each have their own personality—some are a little wild, some seriously charming, and a few might just surprise you. Here are a few of our go-to favorites (because honestly, you deserve options beyond the usual).

But hey, if you’re itching for a bit of city energy instead, we’ve totally got you. Scroll on for our favorite Boston spots—because sometimes you just need some skyline.

Arnold Arboretum

Technically it’s in Jamaica Plains, but it’s as close to Boston as you can get. If you’re a plant person—or just like pretending you’re living in a fairytale meadow—this place is wild. We’re talking fields of blooms, winding paths, and giant old trees that look incredible in every season. It’s mood central, whether you want running-through-flowers energy or cozy-under-a-tree moments.

Tip: During the summer months, this place is busy! Pack some comfortable shoes as parking can be difficult and you might have to walk a little. The park is also spacious, so we always reccomend changing into those comfortable shoe for easy exploring.

Larz Anderson Park

Another amazing spot, just outside of Boston and it’s super underrated! There’s a dreamy willow trees, that iconic hilltop view of the city, and enough open green to get genuinely goofy. Classic brick bridges, ornate stonework… trust me, you’ll feel like you’re on the set of a vintage romance film but without any of the fuss.

Tip: There’s a large parking area at the top, drive past the Auto Musuem and keep following the path to the top.

Piers Park (East Boston)

This one’s a vibe—city skyline behind you, harbor breeze, wild patches of flowers, and a boardwalk that feels built for engagement photos. Sunset here will turn you into golden hour people, even if you’re more night owl than early bird.

Borderland State Park

Big trees, hiking trails, a mansion that looks lifted from a movie—and in the fall, orange leaves everywhere. It’s huge, so you can find your own little hideaway for quiet, candid shots.

Tip: This park closes pretty early and they’re fairly strict about their hours. If you’re looking for some golden hour photos during the summer, it’s best to pick another location after this one for those sunset pictures.

Elm Bank (Wellesly, MA)

Tons of gardens, all tucked along the river—color, color, color. You’ll run into rose gardens, sculptures, sprawling lawns, maybe a moody little greenhouse. This is absolutely one of the most stunning location!

Tip: If you want to shoot here, please make sure to apply for a permit first. They are very strict regarding their photography policy.

Cambridge Side Docks (across from the Esplanade)

Water, boats, and that super-casual city energy. It’s less crowded than the usual spots, and the dock vibe makes everything feel easy. You can see Boston across the river and still have space to chill or dip your feet in after shooting.

Tip: There are so many wonderful spots just along the Charles. Our favorite and most accessible is just behind the Royal Sonesta Hotel in Cambridge.

Lynch Park (Beverly, MA)

Here’s the secret: Rose garden. By the ocean. If that’s not enough, the stone steps, sea breeze, and sun setting right over the water are all ridiculous in the best way possible. You can totally get colorful, garden-party feels here.

Rockport, MA

Quintessential New England seaside town—think art galleries, old harbors, lobster boats, and the classic red Motif #1 shack. The light’s gorgeous, there’s salty air, and just wandering around gives you enough backdrops for a full album.

Gloucester, MA (Hammond Castle)

Want something a bit weird and awesome? Hammond Castle looks like someone dropped a fairytale castle on a rocky coastline. Dramatic arches, stone towers, crashing surf below… it’s for the adventurous or anyone with a soft spot for medieval fantasy vibes.

Trap Falls

Okay, one of my couples found this amazing spot. Who knew there were waterfalls in Mass?! Tucked away in the woods, Trap Falls is as chill as it gets. Waterfall background, mossy rocks, dappled sunlight—bring boots, goof off, and get some “lost-in-nature-but-in-love” shots.

Adams House (Quincy, MA)

Adams House in Quincy is kind of a hidden gem if you’re into that “historic mansion with major old-school charm” vibe. The grounds have giant trees, winding paths, and just enough quiet corners to actually relax. The whole spot feels easy—like you could dress up or just hang out, sneak in some candid shots by the gardens, or get that classic “we’re fancy but also just here for the good time” kind of photo.

Apple Picking (anywhere cute)

No list is complete without the classic New England orchard session. Holding hands between the apple rows, climbing trees, or just admiring the fall foliage—these photos feel real, unscripted, and a little bit fun (even if you’re not actually harvesting anything).
